FMP

Statement of Intent

For my final major project I will work to a brief called “my way” in which I will make a series of logos, graphics and designs to base my artwork under separate from commissions. The artwork will consist of prints and posters that show my artwork. I will be able to use many of the techniques and processes I have learned over the time of my studies and will be able to see where I can fit my work into the creative industry and how I can turn a profit on my design work. Come the end of the project I aim to have a wide variety of images that show my own personal take on illustration placed upon a range of products. I believe this project will yield the best artwork I can create as this has always been a huge interest for me and is where I see myself in the creative industry.

For this project I have already looked at a number of artists and printmakers such as Craig Gleason who works very similarly to how I want my project to turn out, I have also looked into Tom.J.Newell, TittyBats and TallBoy who’s very unique style has become easily recognisable in his community as well as much of the graphics world. I am also looking into other illustrators that can help me further my influences to get a good look into the current market for independent illustrators. As well as them I will also be looking at print work in galleries especially the Sheffield print fair where I will be able to get the most inspiration due to the sheer amount of artwork there and the variety in different techniques used by the artists. As a starting point I plan to look into different artists that show their work in this way. I also want to look into the initial inspiration for these brands and find out what mate them want to begin printing. The relevance of my research is very clear, as it will be my main place to go when I look at creating my own artwork.

For my project I will be using many of the techniques I have learned over the years as well as some new ones, I want to experiment with a lot of new techniques I am yet to use as well to see how well their given effect and efficiency is. For the project I will be using a huge variety in media constantly switching between traditional methods and digital methods to get the best quality in my artwork. I plan to spend my time on the project at the beginning looking into the work of others, I will continue to do so for the rest of the project however I will be creating my own artwork for the majority of the project as well as practicing design methods and styles before printing my final pieces. In all I believe I will have an adequate amount of time to complete the project under the aims I have.

When evaluating my work I believe it should be based on the quality of my work as well as the variety, the amount of design work gone into it and the variety of methods I have used when creating my prints. Come the end there should be a very clear time line that shows where my designs have come from and the reason for the choices I have made for it.

Finding an identity

I want to put myself under a new alias for my FMP where my artwork can be recognised, I want to find a name that has some sort of a ring to it, that seems almost jokey. An issue I have come under is finding a name that I like that isn't already taken.

CRUNK WIZARD: Translation Cool Cool
I found a list of slang words from the 80s and just made a combination that I liked best, thus Crunk Wizard came about.

Design work:

To begin with, I looked into what it would take to get my artwork out to the public, where I would need to go to sell my name. When deciding upon the name I would go under for my artwork I looked at words that have almost gone out of use, I decided to use 80s slang as it is still recognised but I could avoid any problems of having a name that somebody else had. I stuck with "Crunk Wizard" translating to cool cool, I found the name was pretty cool in a lame kind of way which is exactly how I want my artwork to be seen, just like a little joke. The name was great, it was easy to remember, it just sticks in your head. I made a social media account that I could display all of my development and finished work on. This helped to spread my name throughout the public quite easily. When thinking of how I display my artwork, I thought that it would be cool to see somebody to wear my artwork on a shirt, like a walking poster, advertisement that I could be payed for. This lead to my design work being extended into something that could be use for a shirt design. I worked the design over till it was as I saw perfect. Then I sent them off for print.

Colour

When my shirts first arrived I received a lot of complaints from my peers that I was lacking colour in my design (something most people apparently don't know is very costly) however I had already planned to tie dye my shirts as I could still have a wide range of colourful shirts all being completely unique.

Stuck

I reached a point where even my self was beginning to forget that crunk wizard was for my artwork, not just my one shirt design. This amped me to begin to create a wide variety of original pieces to go along with my work, I feel aimed to make each piece reflect a different style I work in.

My first stall

I worked along side the music students to put on a small day festival that could combine both of us and show how both medias can be combined. As the main part of my  work I wanted to make a poster to advertise the event. As such, I used the knowledge I have learnt over my studies to create the poster below.

The most useful part about mount fest is that it gave me a chance to sell my shirts to the general public, although my sales weren't great it definitely helped to spread my name.

Setting up the exhibition

So that tie of year again, walls are up and its time to present. When presenting my work I wanted it to reflect my stall. I decided to have the table and drapes along with my record player just to add a little something and show how music files crunk wizard and its creations. As well as these a few other prop pieces were added like a 7" tall crunk wizard cut out and two life size creeps (a naked dude gendered elongated creature) I feel that these pieces were able to bring people closer to my exhibit to try to find outwit was going off with them. I also presented on of my shirts on a mock me (skeleton in a wig) just so people had rough idea on who they were looking for if they wanted a shirt. Over the back of the wall all the original pieces I made filled the gaps with bold black spaces. In all I feel that my FMP was presented exactly how I imagined it to be.

Social media

A big part of crunk wizard is spreading the name, getting it recognised. This is where social media came into play. I created a instagram account due to them being a tad more lenient on what content they hold as some of my artwork can be a tad out there. Swell as this it allows me to have other people a chance to help advertise me over social media.

Being Human

Being Human

Project Brief

Being Human (Mock F.M.P.)
This project offers you the opportunity to consolidate your existing skills, and extend your visual research through life drawing, alongside your investigation into relevant historical and contextual understanding.
You should consider extending the way in which you interpret the above, in terms of conceptual thought, structural elements relating to life drawing and the relationship of the figure to your subject area. As a starting point you should work towards the following:
You have been asked to participate in an arts festival. The festival theme is “Being Human” and will celebrate the diverse creativity within the local area. The guidelines given for the festival are very broad, and essentially ask that each artist or designer remain true to their own vocational context, in order to ease the planning and mapping of the experience for visitors.
Therefore, you must produce a body of work that demonstrates your knowledge, understanding and ability to work within your chosen career path. In order to do this, you must submit a proposed rational, brief and time-plan for the festival organisers.

Life drawing work

Prior to the mock FMP we had around 12 sessions of life drawings that we used to expand our skills and ideas for drawing the human form, I found this very helpful as I learnt a lot of new skills that I never knew I had prior this project.
I also discovered a love for oil pastel and quick geometric sketches of the human form, this lead me to the point of where I decided the theme I would undertake for my mock FMP.

Primitivism

"Primitivism is a Western art movement that borrows visual forms from non-Western or prehistoric peoples, such as Paul Gauguin's inclusion of Tahitian motifs in paintings and ceramics. Borrowings from primitive art has been important to the development of modern art.
The term "primitivism" is often applied to other professional painters working in the style of native or folk art like Henri Rousseau, Mikhail Larionov, Paul Klee and others."

For my work with Primitivism I want to lean many of the techniques that were used by different tribes and cultures when making their artwork. For my artwork I want to create a series of pieces that mirror how artwork was used to record events and moments in life in a primitive style but of events from the present.

I researched into a method of paint making that was used for many of the worlds cave paintings, these primal paints were made from a base of animal fat, spit and colouring (charcoal for black/ sand for reds/ soil for browns and so on) when doing my sketches I used tools that were used for painting by these primal groups such as hair and sharpened sticks. I found these tools added to the paint mix to be a vey long winded and difficult task and had to tone down my original idea of working exactly how early man did and begin using drawing inks for my artwork ( after all I only have so much spit )

Doll Making

I wanted to create a few 3D pieces to go along side my 2D paintings. A main theme in 3D pieces I found was dolls, each form of doll had a different use or purpose as well as style depending on the culture. I began looking at forms like the european dolls often made from wood or hair like the blair witch one below. then I looked into african fertility dolls that were made to bring pregnancy and good health these often depicted men with large members and women with large breasts. The last doll I made was the voodoo doll, a doll found in witchcraft all over the world, I worked in the caribian style where I started with black dyed clay, decorated with seeds and stone and completed with a fiber body.

Coming of age

The stone below was my attempt at the hand prints left on the cave walls of many north american caves, it is not entirely known what the represented but the lack of child hand prints made many believe that it was a symbol of becoming an adult. To be created the stone would be dampened and then paint would be spat or flung to capture the mark of who ever was being printed.

Now and then

For my 2D piece I wanted to capture a primitive style moment from today in the style of primal artists. My main interest to primitivism was the want to create by man so many years ago that lasts to this day for all to see how they lived. I decided to work from a subject I knew, that being gig life. How a group of people can perform to like up and entertain others back into being in a primal state. For the piece below I still worked with primitive tools but had to use drawing ink as the amount I would have to make would be damn near impossible.

Come the end there should be a very clear time line that shows where my designs have come from and the reason for the choices I have made for it.

Stage one

To begin with, I looked into what it would take to get my artwork out to the public, where I would need to go to sell my name. When deciding upon the name I would go under for my artwork I looked at words that have almost gone out of use, I decided to use 80s slang as it is still recognised but I could avoid any problems of having a name that somebody else had. This lead to my design work being extended into something that could be use for a shirt design. I worked the design over till it was as I saw perfect. Then I sent them off for print. A lot of the comments I received were pretty negative towards my lack of colour (ether they don't know how much print costs or they think Im made of money) I lack the funding to create high quality print with multiple colours. Why people didn't know was that I planned to tie dye the garments to create a large number of unique shirts that had a variety of colour. The finished garments were exactly as I wished and I began to make a few sales that helped to create more people that began to look at 'Crunk Wizards' artwork, I then gave a few away to band members this helped create a pretty big boost on my social media account and spreading my name. Along side my FMP I also set up a Crunk Wizard stall for a local music festival that helped to spread the name. I began to feel as though I was forgetting what my original aim was though. I wasn't generating as much artwork as I was. I began to play with grey board as my canvas, and I fell in love with it as a material, it was perfect, it held my inks and was a solid sturdy material. I created a series of original pieces to go along side my clothing, just to set me aside from any clothing brands, I wanted to reenforce the fact that Crunk was my artwork. I started to look into how I could display my work on a stall. I created a few 'props' to fill out my spot and make it a little more interesting, I had a lot of fun with these. I created a huge cut out of a Crunk Wizard and a few creeps (some weird creature things that stated as a sketch some months back) these seemed to work well waitpeople as they wanted to have a photo with 'the big green wizard' and then ended up looking through my rail and making a purchase. in the past month I feel Ive learnt a lot about how I can find a place for my artwork in the creative industry and turn it into a living.
